'Monitor' wins statewide Newspaper of the Year honor

April 2, 2012 - The Texas Associated Press Managing Editors organization on Sunday honored The Monitor as the state’s Newspaper of the Year for 2011 in the 30,000 to 124,999 Sunday circulation size category.

The top honor in the circulation category was one of 10 awards presented to the newspaper and members of its news staff at TAPME’s annual meeting over the weekend in Dallas. Among those receiving awards was photographer Delcia Lopez, who was named Star Photographer of the Year in The Monitor’s size category. It marks the fourth time in six years that a Monitor photographer has been honored as Photographer of the Year in the newspaper’s size category.

The Monitor news staff also received the following awards:

First Place:
•Reporter Naxiely Lopez, feature series
•Videographer Jaime Hinojosa, best less-than-one-minute video

Second Place:
•Photo Editor Nathan Lambrecht, best online photo gallery
•Reporter Jared Taylor, Specialty reporting
•Sports writer David Hinojosa, Sports column writing
•Delcia Lopez, general news photography

Third Place:
•Graphic designer Juan Luevano, infographics

Honorable Mention:
•Reporters Jared Taylor and Neal Morton, Star Breaking News Report
