Market:
Established in 1835 along the banks of the Neches River, Beaumont took roots seven years before Texas gained U. S. statehood. On Dec. 16, 1838, the Third Congress of the Republic of Texas chartered the city. The first visitors to Beaumont were fur trappers from France and Spain in the early 1800s, and Beaumont soon became an east Texas lumbering, cattle and timber town, as well as the economic center of east Texas.
In 1892, the Gladys City company was formed to drill for oil on the city's south side. And on Jan. 10, 1901, the Anthony F. Lucas Gusher blew in at Spindletop, turning Beaumont into an instant boomtown. In fact, the population of Beaumont grew from 8,500 at the turn of the century to 30,000 within 30 days after the discovery of oil at Spindletop. And by 1903, two years after Spindletop, Beaumont was home to 50,000 people.
Beaumont is the region's largest city and the seat of Jefferson County. We're a natural and cultural crossroads, where Cajun influences are mixed with Texas hospitality. What's more, we offer the best of many worlds to visitors, as Beaumont is just 90 miles from Houston, 25 miles from the Louisiana border, 260 miles from New Orleans and 35 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico.
Beaumont is also home to Lamar University with nationally recognized programs ranging from Engineering to Speech and Hearing.
Things to do: The Cajuns call it Lagniappe meaning "a little something extra." And that pretty much describes Beaumont. We are still pure Texas, but at the same time our Bayou roots make us a combination of two colorful cultures. From two-stepping to Zydeco, enjoying enchiladas and spicy hot boiled crawfish or checking out museums specializing in everything from art to energy, Beaumont's definitely got a Texas-sized portion of Lagniappe!
